UNITENACIOUS is a cultural initiative concept started in the late 2009.
It's actually a combination of UNITEN (Universiti Tenaga Nasional) and the word "tenacious" which means persistent or not easily gives up. This concept reflects each UNITEN students as a member of some student bodies in which a suitable platform to be called as "dummy enterprise" for student's self improvisation. Based on few student bodies' success such as the UNITEN Careers Team, Wawasan, PRS, CLICQ, PPKA, and many more student bodies which are great at what they do, UNITENACIOUS concept is to bring these student bodies' bussinesses to a whole new level.
Several researches have been carried out to make this new concept deployable in UNITEN since September 2009 until early February 2012. However, this concept will have to start from scratch with commitment of various student bodies.
This concept covers a few modules that student bodies in UNITEN can adapt to in order to create a sustaining and competitive environment between the student bodies to achieve optimal productivity and student growth in UNITEN. This is due to the fact that there are numbers of student bodies in UNITEN is already inactive and there are not enough people to bring the student bodies back up. The lack of variance in the event hosted by each student bodies is also worrying and dull, causing UNITEN a boring place to stay over the weekend.
The aims of the concept are (but not limited to):
- To increase self-confidence and value of each dedicated individuals in all the UNITEN's Student Bodies.
- To expose the students to real life challenges.
- To generate a more matured and reliable students community.
- To improve the performance of every student bodies in UNITEN for a long period of time.
- To optimize student activities in each student bodies.
- To produce quality and professional event within UNITEN.
- To create enough opportunities for all students to enhance their soft skills.
- To promote a sense of belonging in each students.
- To provide special response teams towards certain occasions.
1. Budget Study
- A problem faced by majority of student bodies in UNITEN is limited budget allocated for an event. Some even have been allocated no budget at all.
- A trip involving a junior and a senior member of each student bodies organized by The Student Representative Council (SRC) to a certain company and demonstrate the procedure of securing sponsorship from any company.
- This will allow all the student bodies in UNITEN to have corporate exposure. I have seen students who are involved in UNITEN Careers Team have achieved this important skill where they managed to be well presented and confident to deal with outside company with the help of UNITEN Careers Unit. This module also covers the basic knowledge for optimal student body's income.
2. The Elites
- Each of the student bodies have their own M.O (modus operandi) but only partial of them are closely familiar with the MO.
- Each student body will have to identify the very best members of the student body to form an elite team of their own. This team will act as coordinator for their juniors to organize event smoothly and also act as a back up team in-case the event took different path.
- This module requires committed, efficient and matured members and not necessarily be from the existing committee of the student body itself. It could be any members that have proper amount of experience and maturity to lead.
- This team is flexible that it can be made up of MINIMUM 3 person which must includes public relation elite, technical elite, and financial elite. This module also includes mentor-protege culture among students regardless of student bodies (such as treasurer of student body ABC may take an apprentice from student body XYZ or neutral students).
- This is to ensure all the useful knowledge gets passed down to the later batch of students for future reference and sustainability of the student body.
3. The Ambassador (previously known as the Alumni)
- As well shown in Wawasan and some few other student bodies, the student body alumni plays a very important role in assisting the students to organize an event especially on getting sponsorship and wider event exposure.
- Each student bodies have to keep track of their graduated committees and put them as the alumni of the student body. Continuously updating the alumni with the student body's related news.
- Students are encourage to seek their alumni to seek advice or might as well tighten the bond between the old school and the new school.
- This module will work better with active alumni. Let it be the ex-presidents, the ex-vice presidents, the ex-secretary, the ex-treasurer or the ex-heads of department. As long they are always available to pull the magic string.
- Keeping the student body's advisor in mind, these alumni only works front end and does not involve in the student body's activities directly to its management level. This module focusses on producing former students as ambassador, an icon to a student bodies.
4. Start-Up "Dictatorship"
- It is known in many student bodies that there are certain cases where a project manager or the president does most of the work for an event.
- Some are caused by non-committed members trying to be the leecher (which this concept can do nothing about) while some others are caused by lack of confidence to approach their committee or too attached to their committee. It's time to grow up.
- Each student body need to enforce start-up dictatorship for new members to have at least 1 small student body project in their portfolio. However, each student bodies MUST NOT give a major project to a new committee.
- All committees shall start from bottom up so that they can at least, learn. SRC shall monitor if an event is made by junior committee of the student body.
- This will allow more matured working experience and make all the committees to be able to work together as a team without risking the failure of an activity.
- This module does not discourage confident new committee to take up the challenge for becoming a team leader but more or less to encourage the idea of "there's no shortcut to top" and it's best to practice "experience gathering and influence building".
5. The Ice Breaker
- The SCORUN system already encourage students to participate in activities held in UNITEN. But the problem remains on their interest.
- To bring out the very best of the new commitees, let them start with the small scale events first to adapt with the working environment change. This will definitely will not put the new committee in too much stress as well as keeping their interest to be active intact.
- This module includes several low cost, smaller scaled yet beneficial events to be organized by student bodies. Indirectly, this increases student bodies' productivity and thus produce more events in UNITEN.
6. The Jack of all Trades
- This module focusses more on students' self-building. BAKSIS can be put under this module. Other than that, there're several other programmes that is in the module to train students of versatile capabilities.
- From event organizing, to UNITEN very own hacker team. An association like UNITEN SEALS can try to focus more on this module to identify versatile students that sometimes does not given the opportunity to outshine.
7. Community and Special Response Teams
- This module is based on the once glorious Aibob community and Prince Network in UNITEN. This module is the privatize groups in UNITEN that acts as a medium of interaction between all students in UNITEN. Such projects as UnitenTV, UNITEN Media Team, etc. can be included under this module.
- This module also puts up all the Jacks from previous module to form a particularly expert team. Teams to represent UNITEN in certain special occasions, like UNITEN's hacker team, UNITEN's Quick Programmer group, UNITEN parkour team, UNITEN's golf team, UNITEN's pool & snooker team, etc.
- This module will ensure a very welcoming environment for new students to be active and play a role in the university.
Notes:
- All the modules within this concept requires total commitment.
- All the modules need to be executed in stages.
- We vision a more professional, healthy and exciting future in UNITEN's co-curricular sector.
- All modules are merely suggestions. New modules can be introduced to achieve the aims.
- This is not about how SRC interfering how a student body runs. It's how all student bodies in UNITEN should improve to not be dead in the future.
